offer them what they need

If there is one area where we can really help make a difference in backyard wild bird diversity, it’s putting up birdhouses.  In our “well pruned” urban landscape that we have created, cavity-nesting birds don’t stand a chance.  Not all bird species nest inside cavities, but for those that do, finding suitable real estate in the L.A. area can be challenging.  The practice of removing dead snags and trees from gardens and parks also removes the future homes of woodpeckers, bluebirds, and wrens - just to name a few.  Because birds are very particular about their nesting sites, getting the right information is critical to having success with a nesting box.  Along with decorative birdhouses, we carry boxes for every cavity nesting species in Southern California.

Oak Titmouse - Pacific Palisades.

Looking inside a Western Bluebird nesting box - Santa Monica.

Barn Owl and passerine box - San Fernando Valley.

Bewick's Wren using decorative birdhouse in North Hills.

Other birds will sometimes commandeer unoccupied Bluebird boxes.  This House Wren raised 3 broods during one season in this Coldwater Canyon residence!
